What Is Your Body Trying to Tell You Through Pain & Tension?

WHAT ARE WE MADE OF?

As a young adult in college, one of the first subjects I was taught was Anatomy and Physiology. It was then that I truly began to understand how complex and fascinating the human body is. More than anything, it gave me awareness of the multiple automatic functions consistently operating without our knowledge or consciousness — all day, every day.

The body is constantly adapting to its environment, and its main goal is simple: STAY ALIVE.

Billions of cells are constantly dying, regenerating, processing, communicating, and sustaining the body to keep life flowing through us. But how can we ever begin to comprehend this complexity as we move through our busy lives? And even more importantly, how can we slow down enough to recognise, listen to, and understand what the body is trying to tell us?

One way is through… receiving a massage.

At Holism Remedial Massage in Carrara, we often remind our clients that pain, tension, and stress rarely happen in isolation. The body is deeply connected, and symptoms in one area can often stem from dysfunction somewhere else.

TIME TO LISTEN.

We are made of multiple layers. The fundamental movers of the body are muscles, the skeletal system, and connective tissue, including fascia, tendons, and ligaments.

When there is dysfunction in one of these structures, it can create a cascade of compensation throughout the body. Over time, more structures become involved, and what once started as a small issue may develop into chronic tension, reduced mobility, or ongoing pain.

Remember — nothing happens in isolation. The cells, tissues, and structures of the body are constantly communicating with each other.

During a remedial massage, a space is created where we can step into the body, have time to reflect and sit in the body rather than the busy, distracting mind. It’s an opportunity to become aware of the secrets whispered to us every single day.

As a Remedial Massage Therapist, massage has always been a facilitator in merging mind and body for clients, whether they are aware of it or not. I think of it as a ‘listening tool’ for my clients. Checking in, just for a brief time.

Different varying sensations of pain are often a surprise and a reminder that pain lives in the body as a means of communication…. those early warning signs.

RECOVERY TOOLS FOR MIND-BODY CONNECTION

There are many daily practices that can help strengthen the mind-body connection and improve recovery, stress management, and overall wellbeing.

These include:

  • Breathwork & Meditation

  • Mindful Movement

  • Remedial Massage

  • Foam Rolling

BREATHWORK

There are many ways to reconnect with the breath, but one of my personal favourites is Box Breathing. The visual aspect helps keep the mind engaged and grounded.

Here’s How:

Find a quiet, comfortable space. You can be seated or lying down with your eyes closed.

Visualise a square. Each side of the square represents one phase of the breath.

  • Inhale for 4 seconds

  • Hold for 4 seconds

  • Exhale for 4 seconds

  • Hold again for 4 seconds

That completes one “box breath.”

You can repeat this for several minutes or incorporate it into your daily routine.

Benefits of Breathwork & Meditation

  • Reduces stress and anxiety

  • Improves focus and mental clarity

  • Enhances relaxation and sleep quality

  • Helps regulate the nervous system

MINDFUL MOVEMENT

Mindful movement includes practices such as yoga, stretching, walking, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, foam rolling, and mobility exercises.

These movements not only improve physical health and mobility but also help you become more aware of areas holding tension, dysfunction, or pain.

Mindful movement works best when paired with intentional breathing:

  • Inhale during the recovery phase

  • Exhale during the effort phase

This supports oxygen delivery to muscles and encourages nervous system regulation.

Benefits of Mindful Movement

  • Reduces the “fight or flight” stress response

  • Improves body awareness

  • Enhances emotional regulation and wellbeing

  • Supports mobility, recovery, and injury prevention

REMEDIAL MASSAGE

Many people have different perceptions about what massage can do for the body and mind. Often, first-time clients are surprised by how different they feel afterwards — lighter, calmer, more mobile, or with significantly less pain and tension.

At our Gold Coast remedial massage clinic, we commonly see clients seeking help with:

  • Neck and shoulder tension

  • Back pain

  • Headaches and migraines

  • Sports recovery

  • Stress-related tension

  • Chronic pain and stiffness

  • Mobility restrictions

Here’s why it helps:

During a remedial massage, the nervous system receives a large amount of sensory information known as proprioceptive input.

What Is Proprioceptive Input? Proprioceptive input comes from specialised receptors in muscles, tendons, and joints that detect movement, tension, and body position.

Benefits of Proprioceptive Input During Massage

  • A calming effect: Deep pressure, a form of proprioceptive input, has been shown to have a calming effect on the nervous system. It can reduce the anxiety and promote relaxation.

  • Pain management: Proprioceptive input can aid in pain management by overriding pain signals. When massage is applied, proprioceptive messages about muscle movement and location can reach the brain faster than pain signals, providing relief.

  • Enhanced body awareness: massage techniques that incorporate this input can improve clients’ awareness of their body, helping them to recognise areas of tension and facilitate better movement patterns.

FOAM ROLLING

Foam rolling, also known as Self-Myofascial Release (SMR), is a simple self-massage tool that can help relieve tight muscles and trigger points at home.

Applying pressure through the body onto a foam roller can encourage muscle relaxation, tissue recovery, and improved movement quality.

Benefits of Foam Rolling

  • Improved joint range of motion

  • Reduced muscle tension and sensitivity

  • Better recovery after exercise or stress

  • Improved neuromuscular efficiency

  • Enhanced mind-body connection

Effect on muscle cells

In simple terms, when the pressure of the body against the foam roller is sustained on the trigger point, the GTO (Golgi tendon organs) will “turn off” the muscle spindle activity allowing the muscle fibres to stretch, unknot, and realign.

GIVE IT A TRY!

Sometimes the body whispers before it screams.

Taking time to slow down, reconnect and listen to your body through movement, breathwork or remedial massage can make a huge difference to long-term health and recovery.
